I think the idea is that killing half the population does a hard reset on Society. No one is going to change how they conserve their resources if they keep getting more. Thanos would have to snap his fingers every couple of years to keep doubling resources.

Generally the stories aren’t pretty linear. There are no good or bad choices. Besides Trevor the characters aren’t like villains. They all struggle with trying to be good people but are mostly stuck in this life.
