My favorite running gag is one that has spanned sitcoms from the 1980's (as far as I can tell) until now. It is the unseen character gag (possible origin: Charlie on Charlie's angels who was heard and not seen).

In the 1980's we called it "Fumble Rumble" - I think a fairly accurate name. For regional reference, I grew up in Milwaukee.
