More resources that site the same statistic, if you want them
Freedom of speech does not mean what you think it means. Freedom of speech means that the GOVERNMENT can not throw you in prison or fine you or whatever for making a statement. Freedom of speech does not mean that ll speech is above critique and that you can say whatever you want without fear of SOCIAL sanction.
The statistic is 1/3 of women worldwide are victim of sexual assault or attempted sexual assault.
I think that once 1/4 of women havent experienced the terror of rape and maybe when more than 3% of rapists see jail time, maybe I will have more of a sense of humor. But with those statistics the current reality, that shit is not funny. It only serves to make rape seem like its not a big deal or not a real problem…
This. Totally.
Yeah, if the case even makes it that far. According to RAINN only about 3% of rapists ever see any jail time.
I am so sick of "false reporting! it can ruin a mans WHOLE LIFE." That is such a fucking red herring. I'm sure throughout history there have been a few instances where this has happened but it is NOTHING compared to the rampant sexual assault rates in this country and around the world. Come on.
Thank you for getting my ramble-y analogy haha.
These groups (race, gender, etc) are not self selecting groups, though. The military IS self selecting.
My husband hasn't shot anyone. He works at a desk and helps coordinate training of language/culture, to soldiers about to deploy etc. His job is to prevent people from shooting other people when possible.
Me too. I really hate that. My husband was young, he was desperate for an education, he was fed lie after lie romanticizing the military and he signed a contract. Its awful. i cant believe that they can work to recruit CHILDREN at high schools etc who havent even developed a sense of their own morality or even like,…
You accused anyone who shared alternate opinions and experiences of "gas-lighting" the original poster. So when you did that, it was in response to things I said.
I love my husband and I am proud of him...not because he is in the military, but because while being in the military he makes it a point to stand up against these things (domestic abuse, sexual assault...stands up for lgbt rights etc). When people speak in absolutes about a whole group of people, they lump him in…
I never ever ever said that her experiences were not legitimate. I acknowledged that a lot of military members act this way. Holy hell. I never said "just because i know one not ass hole in the military that your feelings are not legitimate." I said, "you are right. a lot of members of the military are ass holes…
So the original poster is allowed to share about her experiences but I am not allowed to share about mine? Who made that rule up?
"it's still a choice" sounds pretty privileged. For some people it is their only way to go to college.
I understand that when a person is hurt they tend to speak in what some other people might say are hyperboles etc. But I dont think that an "us versus them" mentality is helpful when there are some of THEM that are also part of US.
and i never said she was not entitled to her opinion or that her experience wasn't valid. don't put words in my mouth. i agreed with her on most of it but said that it was unfair to say that all of almost any group is a certain way. if she had even said "almost all" or "nearly all" or even "practically all" it…
"self selecting" is a little bit simplistic, which is why i pointed out that some people joined the military because they were unable to find another way to pay for college.
