Wow...quick answer is because a 70-80 mph road trip in a gas nets you very low mpg while in a diesel it remains about the same. BUT also all the torques and when that turbo is tuned for your engine an SUV can feel like a sports car off the line!

I live near Kaiserslautern...yes there are plenty of 15-25 year old vehicles...my 01 330D Touring w/300km has a complete service history, virtually no rust, runs great, and only cost me 3000 Euro! The Germans care for their autos much better than most Americans.

Actually, I don’t know if you’ve been to Portugal or Mexico...Portugal is cheap and you won’t get sick if you drink the water. Plus it has the added benefit of not being connected to the drug cartel human trafficking South America that we have all come to know and love. Portugal is the safe bet...just saying.
