I like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, and I really wanted to like Gentleman Broncos, but it was too much just quirk for the sake of quirk and didn't really have anything to say aside from "don't these small-town weirdos dress funny?" so hopefully not having Hess write means he'll actually have a story this this

Yeah the bell was definitely the sound of the "idea lightbulb" in my opinion. I think that was the sound of him conceiving of the Coke ad. Whether or not he went back to New York, or just gave the idea to Peggy or someone else (what's Freddy Rumsen up to these days?) is open to interpretation, but everything in the

So the question is: Is there a correct form of "ovation" that he should have used?

Maybe they added some kind of non-disparagement clause to his contract after he said those things?

Here's hoping that all of Shearer's characters suddenly have to return to their home planets in the first episode of the next season.

I actually thought this was probably the best episode of the season so far — the first one where the absence of Troy and Shirley (and Pierce and Hickey) didn't feel glaring, and the pacing and rhythm didn't feel awkward and slow. True, it worked on some similar territory as Conspiracy Theories, but The Sting is

I love how in panel 3 he's just standing there with his mouth agape in a wide grin identical to his expression in panel 2

I'm 3 episodes in, and I'm really digging it. The whole cast is really good and they're all written to have different perspectives instead of everyone just sounding like they're speaking the same writer's words like many shows.

I agree. I watched the documentary about his live tour (Conan O'Brien Can't Stop) and it was disappointing how much of the tour felt sour and how much of his live show's jokes were just bitterly complaining about how unfairly he was treated by NBC.

He really took NBC's "Make it 1997 again through science or magic" note to heart.

I could never get onboard with Hicks' anger about that, I mean, the whole Tonight Show format started out as one of those bought-and-paid-for hourlong Geritol variety shows. It's actually a step up that Leno and Fallon did standalone commercials outside the context of the show rather than turning to the camera in the

At this rate, the show really will introduce Phil's identical twin brother before the season's over.

Well, he wasn't ever really even a "comedian." He was more of what would, in England, be termed a "presenter." Things like Carnac are just as easy as anything Fallon does (which is why it's so often imitated).

That's pretty much it I think. I was one of the people who was really excited about Conan getting The Tonight Show, and really pissed off when he was summarily fired after such a short time, but in hindsight it was probably foolishly optimistic to think that subversive, writerly comedy would be successful in that

I don't know if Carson was a "comedian's comedian" so much as he was feared/loved by comedians for his taste and single-handed power to launch careers in a way that doesn't really exist anymore.

I do think the lip syncing, games and nostalgic recreation things on Fallon's Tonight Show are kind of lame and easy, but at the same time The Tonight Show isn't exactly intended to be a playground for cutting edge alt-comedy envelope pushing.
