@avclub-2672292548089c65c6648b3f200fcd7f:disqus Yeah, that's basically the whole appeal of Christianity: there's an all-powerful dude out there, he loves you, and he has a plan for you. Even if you get shot or whatever, it was according to his plan, and as long as you're a good person, you'll get to go hang out in

I agree that this show can teeter on the brink of boring at times, some of the more "tone-poem"-ish episodes don't really end up amounting to much, but I didn't think that was the case last night.

I'm sure there was a SPIDEY NABS WEBB or something headline in Variety.

@avclub-58f80cfeb0401e72edadcc105edade0c:disqus Well, I have no problem with him being able to take a bullet to the chest, but I personally feel that him being completely indestructible is silly. He should at least react somehow to getting shot right in the fucking eyeball. And I have no problem with him being able to

He mostly just complained that the plot kind of gives up and ends up not amounting to much more than a series of episodic, disconnected set pieces, which is true of pretty much every Coen picture that doesn't directly revolve around a criminal investigation.

There are some intentional mysteries that I would say are better left to be revealed in the picture rather than just telling people beforehand (i.e. What's in that train car in Super 8), though I agree that if knowing a specific bit of info can "spoil" an entire movie, that probably signifies that the movie was rotten

@avclub-bf685d0c6e419fab93fb447f71610d36:disqus Sure, but what makes for a good comic doesn't necessarily make for a good movie. He can fly to another planet and explore in the comics because it's issue 9765 and he's already saved Lois a thousand times, but if you're telling the origin story I think the stakes are

@WrongSirWrong:disqus I agree that it was bad ass, but it also had the effect of establishing that Superman (in that film) is completely invulnerable to anything except Kryptonite, which is kind of the least interesting version of the character.

@avclub-bf685d0c6e419fab93fb447f71610d36:disqus So he can fly around in space away from our solar system for five years?

Yeah, I was a huge Superman fan when I was a kid, and I don't think I ever cared about the "American dream" stuff, which always came off as super corny. Isn't the American dream effectively just the idea of upward mobility? I don't know what that has to do with Superman.

The Fountain is seven years old, dude. Red Eye is eight.

@avclub-85bd06050f1868adf468605465df26f8:disqus By characterizing Rolo's actions as "expressing displeasure" you're kind of giving his rather rape-y actions a free pass.
Sure, he can try and kiss Sally, and that's not out of the norm for kids of their age who are discovering their sexuality. But he definitely played

@avclub-5bbc67c39fbdf1c74e28b86c595f6e4a:disqus The point is not that there's any "correct" way to refer to a member of any particular minority group, it's that calling someone "a Japanese" or "a gay" or "a retard" (or whatever) emphasizes their otherness over their humanity. You can call someone "a Japanese person,"

I can't really see them using Bizarro in these more serious takes on the Superman universe. Especially since Bizarro often comes off as a not very politically correct caricature of a Down syndrome sufferer.

@avclub-183f50a7700982a3ed18ff6d7a5777bf:disqus Much like Bane with Batman, Doomsday is really only interesting insofar as he has the ability to "break" Superman (though you're right, Doomsday is somewhat less interesting since he's essentially Godzilla and doesn't have any real strategy or ideals to pontificate

It just seemed like an admission that that's the kind of thing that happens when SC&P sends you on a business trip.

@avclub-71d02d84e9250a644a3b67f818871eac:disqus I didn't think there was anything wrong with her saying "he tried to force me," per se, but Glen obviously took it to mean something more than what had actually happened.

I loved how Megan's character was saying something along the lines of "How dare you ignore me!" and Don just cavalierly switches the channel.

It was Catch Me If You Can, which is an excellent film.

I thought that joke was weird because it didn't seem like the sort of thing Don would say in front of Megan, especially if he's worried about her finding out about Sylvia.
