You’re assuming the Praetorian Guard were the Knights of Ren, which doesn’t seem likely. Snoke refers to Kylo as Master of the Knights, while the guard clearly answered to Snoke alone (evidenced by their reaction to Ben when he gets upset with Snoke).

Having also seen every episode, I would say the exact opposite. The show drastically improved in season 2. Season 1 is interesting but it’s all plot. The characters just aren’t developed like they are in later seasons.
