Yeah, same here. While one side of my family is old school UK (Oxford educated, lots of military men, lots of doctors and lawyers), the other side is Welsh, Liverpool dock worker. I’m not convinced I would have had the same opportunities in the UK that I’ve had in Australia.

Charles Manson joined Scientology earlier when he was in a Federal pen. He made it all the way to “theta clear” before he was released. That tells me how worthless Scientology is.

Yeah I agree about Cumberbatch. Its always a bad sign to me when people can’t accept their privilege, and do the whole “Well ACTUALLY it almost counted against me this one time, so...”. It very much implies a lack of ability to understand inequality and see things from other’s perspectives, which is often in itself a

Yeah, as you say - mainly London. Talking to scousers it seems like they definitely get the roughest deal with this.

Yeah, and they had to leave Europe because they were such assholes about it nobody could stand them.

I mean, they’re essentially the same, I use the two terms interchangeably, as do many textbooks, though granted I am a 19th century historian. They hated being called “puritans,” it was an insult, they would have called themselves “saints,” but fuck them.

A large proportion of British actor are Oxbridge educated too.

Sadly, it’s not. They have some pretty strict hair rules. And they can never cut it so as to wash their husband’s feet with it in heaven, so lots of meaning to it. But they are intricate, interesting braids.

I was just thinking, “ok, apparently fish-tail braids are SUPER TRENDY in the fundy Mormon sect this season.”

That’s a lot of braids.

Hiddleston et al all like to downplay their backgrounds as if they started from the bottom like everyone else. I picked Cumberbatch as an example because he is odious to me for his blatant attempts to dodge the fact that he’s posh and he gets indignant if people point it out. Are these men good actors? Sure. But they

My husband (from Korea) is here to explain. The mother explains to the happy couple (Chloe is in Korean traditional wedding attire) that she’s sorry she and her husband don’t have a lot of money to help them start their lives together. The groom-to-be says no matter, we can start from the bottom (my husband says he

Years ago Jezebel had a post about irrationally hating people, I think specifically celebrities. Chloe Grace Moretz is on my list. I can’t tell you exactly why I don’t like her, she probably doesn’t deserve it and I’m too long in the tooth to actively dislike a teenager, but she gets under my skin. Clouds of Sils

Ah, that’s because it’s the first of many holidays they’ll be taking this year. I don’t understand the compulsion to be wet and cold on holiday, either, but then I don’t own a chalet in Chamonix nor the social cachet that comes with it.

Joseph Fiennes’s career.

In 1998 I started at an inner London comprehensive it was 30 to a class and then they split up another form group and we were at 35. And we weren’t the exception, my mother was a comprehensive head for 15 years, it was 30 to a form.

No to mention there are a number of girls schools of high regard like Badminton, Cobham, Cheltenham Ladies College and Goldolphin.

That is all really interesting, and I’ll have to take a look at it when I have a moment. I do think that it was good to have some selectivity in the system and that is what people are praising fondly. I also think it’s important not to compare apples to oranges - people got fewer and worse qualifications in general

Yep. I get why they were (mostly) abolished and in theory I agree that all children should have the same opportunity, but in practice it meant that before there was at least a way out for some poor children, and now it’s very hard for clever poor children to do well, unless they are very, very lucky.
