They ran their cars at 300+km/h for up to 20-25 minutes at a time without any blowouts, or mechanical meltdowns. That's reliability, and incredibly fast average speed.

I was on the team that did the restoration on that very car, 5R002!! It was serial number 2, but actually the very first Shelby Mustang ever made, one of three prototypes. The original GT350 competed in SCCA and Trans Am racing Orlove. I'm thinking that's why they likely focused on cornering. The GT350 wasn't really made for straight line.

Mazda's PR team is really underrated. They make all sorts of unique gestures to the public by building off of these kind of humble stories, putting modest people in the spotlight and turning fans into brand loyalists.
