My best Cancun advice is to get out of the city. Valladolid is a couple of hours west of Cancun via the excellent value ADO first class bus. Safe as any city in the US and an excellent base to launch trips to Mayan ruins. Goods and services will also be a 10th the price you pay in coastal tourist places.

I second Google Fi.  I’ve used it now in Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico without a hiccup.  I’d previously used Sprint’s free 3G international service and it was not nearly as good.
