He actually only directed two recent X-Men movies. While Apocalypse received a pretty tepid response from audiences and critics, DOFP before it is often hailed as one of the best comic book movies made and made Fox became bolder with the property which led to movies like Logan, Deadpool and two TV series.

Man of Steel was likely made with criticism of Superman Returns in mind, and it worked considering MoS had both a higher gross and Cinemascore compared to Returns. They were going for different things anyway.
