@Eldritch: I agree. I was not impressed with what I learned about it. While I probably wouldn't see this movie anyway, I now know to avoid it on principle.

M87 is impressively large. However I believe the event horizon of the black hole at the center of our own galaxy would have a larger angular diameter - although it is significantly smaller, it is a lot closer. All other things being equal, it would be easier for the next generation of telescopes to resolve the event…
