I don’t believe it’s the governments job to prevent people from being offended. Maybe that’s just part of my nature as an American living under the 1st amendment, but I think people are free to say whatever they want even if it’s offensive to someone else.

I never said it couldn’t be a crime. Robbing a bank, whether you do it for the love of money or not, is still robbing a bank. The crime isn’t hating money, it’s robbing the bank.

There is some confusion I believe in the different definitions of hate crimes in the US and Britain. A hate crime in the US absolutely requires hostility and hate. It is one of the most harshly punished of all crimes.

I don’t do it obviously, but the fact that you want to classify it as a hate crime is absurd. Luckily, this British law would be completely unconstitutional in the US.

When you expand the meaning of a word too much, it loses its original meaning. Is a cat call the same as dragging a gay man behind a pickup truck or burning a cross in someone’s yard? No? Then why would you call them the same thing?
