I know most people remember him from “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and his first movie (which is brilliant) but I’ll always remember him from his early appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” where he was just pure gold.
Surprised to not see Tár on this list. I loved that it was rather brutal in displaying Lydia Tár’s faults and shortcomings. It could have easily veered into hagiography, considering how revered she is in real life.
I grew up in a “small town”, and I’ve seen this bullshit posturing. The fact is that young guys would give their left nut to make it to the city, and the older guys are bitter because they never escaped. You have to have pride in your small town way of life, because otherwise you can only see yourself as a fucking…
Show of hands. How many people grew up in a small town and found it to be a place of warm and comforting acceptance for people of different backgrounds and beliefs.
Lol why not just sing a song called “sun-down town” and be done with it?
IMO, Bohemian Rhapsody should be on this list too. Once everyone got past the “Wow, Rami Malek sort of looks like Freddie Mercury” reaction to the early shots, the movie was deadly dull and - also IMO - barely touched on Mercury’s personal life, which everyone expected. The fact that all members were not on board…
GWAR’s Tiny Desk Concert has been up at NPR for more than 8 hours and I haven’t seen a peep about it at the AV Club. That ain’t right.
Also Bizarre with John Byrner which gave us Super Dave Osborne.
Agreed. Python is definitely #1 but I think SCTV is a close, close #2.
Miss Swan? The character that is a collection of asian stereotypes and was named Miss Kwan in her first appearance? If you actually believe she’s Björk-inspired I have a bridge to sell you. There’s no denying MADtv launched a ton of careers but to count Miss Swan as anything but a stain on its legacy is embarassing.
I’d certainly put it right up there in the #5 no question
SCTV #1.
Also, shoutout to Four of the Floor, who don’t belong on this list but should be given honourable mention for giving us Canadians (and probably many Americans in the more northern states) Mr. Canoehead.
Darn those deadly mormons!
I never can get these videos to play on my system to be honest. Clicking the play button does nothing for me.
And in case you don't want to watch a video for something that was barely an article idea, Mutt died in the war he enlisted in to "spite his dad." Indy is actually really broken up about it and it basically destroyed his marriage.
They certainly are. Check out ‘The Girl With The Dogs’ on Youtube for examples.
I said above that Empire Strikes Back is his best total work, but the Superman Theme has to be his best single piece of music. It’s beyond iconic. You could play it for someone who had never hears of Superman and they would still somehow say that’s Superman’s Theme.
The Superman theme might be my favorite Williams piece of music ever. It never ceases to raise my spirits and make me think I could be Superman.
