Assuming this change actually takes place, what would stop the cable companies from just foisting this new 3rd party hardware on customers with a rental fee, the same way they do with modems and routers?

And even if they’re right, what difference does it make? Vehicle designs have influenced other vehicle designs since the very beginning. Who cares if there are similarities? In almost no instances are we ever looking at full-blown design theft.

True, but I think there are a lot of cars out there with good bones. And really it's better/more fun for motivated owners to find that potential rather than VW building it and charging people for it.
