I think that's exactly what the show has acknowledged. These people (including his wife) have all been pawns in his pursuit of power. And when their loyalty is challenged, his refusal to love-or even care for-these people as more than props to his plans, they ultimately abandon him. I'm talking Remy, Claire, and even

The absence of all other characters seems to be the point. Frank has refused (spit on) a path of love and has therefore alienated every person in his life. The season starts with him peeing on his dad's grave and it ends with his wife leaving him. Frank is alone and he's alone because that is the path he has chosen.
