I'll admit there are a lot of lighter fare on PSN but it's a pretty varied ecosystem. I just spent my weekend playing Hotline Miami which certainly isn't a casual, artsy game.
You are correct. They list the "classics" (PS1, PS2) separately.
It does line up with Microsoft's general MO for the console.
I have no plans to capture tons of footage but local HDD works better for me since my internet upload speed is cruddy. Syncing tons of footage to an external server will take forever for me.
It will be interesting to see how hard Microsoft pushes the One towards mainstream consumers as a cable box alternative. If they really go after that market, locking the TV stuff behind Gold could be an challenging sell to consumers that aren't primarily interested in games.
I don't know if their financial model is that completely dependent on subscriptions. They also need people to buy games since they get a cut for licensing.
