Trump wasn’t even a Republican until he ran for the nomination. Party affiliation really doesn’t matter. If anything, Sanders independent status only makes him the far more viable candidate than any generic establishment type.

More people who voted for Clinton in the 2008 primaries then voted for McCain in the general than did Sanders primary voters did for Trump in 2016.

Many Sanders supporters would happily vote for someone else if anyone else was nearly as qualified or progressive. That could still change, but thus far has not.
