I really find it disingenuous when some news article talks about how so-and-so workers only make [super low dollar amount a day]— as though that has any real meaning. Hell, we all know that making $15 an hour goes a lot further in Topeka, KS than it does in San Francisco. Why would we imagine that without any context,

Totally. I remember being a grad student in Baltimore. When I discovered that my favorite team was playing the Ravens in Baltimore right near my birthday, I waited and waited for the day that tickets went on sale. Remember: I’m a grad student, so I’m poor. However, I knew the face value of the cheapest tickets and

For a more humorous take on some of the issues brought up here (not specific to the “luck” thing, but definitely the “hard work means you get success” thing), see this John Oliver video. You might appreciate things starting at the 4:55 mark— or at least, it might show some of the “other side’s” perspective.

Someone help out an old guy with no kids. What the hell is this “toys-to-life” thing? I just watched a video on it, and it still didn’t explain the concept very well.

This is a pretty angry rant filled a lot of right wing-fueled stereotypes. It’s hard to know if you’ll even listen thoughtfully to a reply to some of your comments, but here goes (note that this will be long— I hope that’s not a problem since I know some on the internet get annoyed with that):

Uh, as a regular traveler I do this all the time. No one has ever stopped me at TSA for me 3-4 3oz bottles of booze in the little baggie. And given that each of those minis you get from the airline is not even 2 oz and costs $6-7, you’re saving a boatload.

Man. I normally hate book excerpts— there’s typically too much said that is built from previous chapters to make it understandable. This totally had me hooked.

God fuck. I see this term all over these Gawker sites and the first few hits on Google aren’t even helping. So help an old man out. What the fuck is this term and how is it even pronounced?

OK. But the population of the United States and Canada is about the same as that of Western Europe. And yet Western Europe— as you note— supports a host of great leagues totaling something around 100 teams. Imagining the US and Canada to host 30 isn’t a crazy number.

I hate you for saying this. Well, saying this and being right.

Worse, it’s clear that P. Manning’s last win wasn’t because of him.

It took me extra time to read that.

Good point. We like to think of teams acting independently but in fact there is quite a bit of coordinated effort.

M1 Abrams Dank.

RIGHT? I don’t even know what “woke bae” means (I’m old) but fuck if I’m tired of seeing it in every other headline.

Interesting, but like in the New York example noted in this post: Why not simply say it publicly? The Giants would have come off much better had the PR flak simply said “We refer to them by the city name because we don’t find their mascot appropriate” or something.

Eh. From what you’ve described of yourself, you have some military/combat/police experience. You have training in things like fighting and your reactions to someone pulling a gun are probably going to be different than 99% of us.

This is amazing, and that judge deserves an award.

I love this whole thing. I’m at like level 14 and have trouble collecting enough money to buy a home (working on it) but one of these days, though. The infinite possibilities that this game offers are just amazing.
