I hope the Rog shows some consistency and completely fucks this up.

Dr Hunt didn’t have his career destroyed. Dr Hunt resigned from an unpaid honorary position, and still has his lab.
But it isn’t just “shaming” it is destroying a person’s livelihood by demanding they be ousted form jobs and positions, to prevent them from ever having gainful employment for the rest of their lives. That isn’t shaming, that is taking away their life to the fullest extent possible short of committing a crime.
I know. And I for some reason want to live in a world where everyone gets a fair trial and maybe even the benefit of the doubt. This whole world of internet lynch mobbing we live in is not what justice is all about.
I clicked on this article thinking it would be something very differnet. This is just an argument to not defend people that have been shamed.
Someone explain to me how the very point of this article is not itself tone shaming.
It’s none of your business. And it wasn’t about sex. Nor was it a strawman.
Actually did just that earlier today.. I asked one of the black guys that works in our warehouse if he could pull an order for me. He said “Yessa Boss.”.. I said “Actually, it’s Master.”
The struggles faced by women (especially white women) have absolutely zero comparison to those faced by blacks.
If his labs were 50% more or women, and they never had any problems, I’d look for a different explanation than “he’s a bigot”. It would certainly show that he wasn’t actually excluding them from his lab.
aka you can't yada yada sex, or something.
The problem I see is when internet outrage argument styles start to creep into real-life conflict.
That’s the point with Seinfeld’s comment about not wanting to perform on college campuses. The failure mode of a joke is no longer silence, or an audience member leaving, or groans. The failure mode on campus is that if you tell a joke that doesn’t go over well, or god forbid offends someone, you’re now history’s…
It is all about demonstrating moral superiority and demonstrating how much more social aware you are than the next poster.
“ In the case of Tim Hunt, they think the scientist should be put back in his old job because it’s OK for him to declare publicly that he discriminates against an entire class of his colleagues, at a professional event being held in those colleagues’ honor.”
Nah, that’s exactly what she’s saying. It was fine for the shame cycle to end his career, what wasn’t fine was when people started saying “Hey, hold on, that’s an overreaction” which is certainly an arguable position - it’s not like the man is ineducable. He’s a guy who made a stupid joke, he’s not a dog that mauled a…
Well said. Everyone is just fine with the outrage machine until they find themselves on the other side of it after a momentary misstatement or God forbid, slightly veering off the demanded narrative on a particular subject.
“He was essentially telling these women that he didn’t think they should work in science.”
I feel like the stakes online have risen to a fever pitch. Everything is amplified a billion times, for better or for worse. Hunt was right to resign from his post over what he said because his views were harmful and old fashioned. There are many, many, MANY cases where the internet pulls out the pitchforks and…
“We need to get out of the shame-spiral… well, we can spiral a little… only until it gets to the exact resolution I believe in.”
