Probably a great idea since he’s also familiar with the integral role that cocaine and prostitutes play in The Beautiful Game.

You not taking financial advice from someone because they’re rich would be like me refusing to take a tennis lesson from Serena Williams because she doesn’t know the struggle of being completely uncoordinated and hasn’t had to bear that cross.
This guy doesn’t get Oliver at all. I’ve seen him make simlar comments on posts that involve him. I never get it, but if you don’t like the message or the way someone delivers it then just don’t watch it.
There’s annoyed, and then there’s holding a grudge which seems to be what you’re doing. I think it’s fine that you didn’t like the segment, but you’re taking it to a weird place when you start making big assumptions about what kind of background he must come from based on where he went to college (news flash: in the…
That sort of anti-elitism is a problem in this country. Some people are smart. Some people go to good schools. Some of those same people are progressive, compassionate, and wealthy. Those people should be in charge of things, and their opinions should matter, because ideally, their wealth is secondary to their skills…
Yeah, you COMPLETELY missed the purpose of that segment.
Wait just a second. Let’s say he grew up poor and went to school on loans. Because he ended up being successful, that negates any experience he might have with being poor? Wow. I guess since I went from living on $30,000 a year for seven people in a household to making almost $50k a year for just me, that means I…
Fucking THIS. All his having gone to Cambridge means is that he was accepted to Cambridge, ffs.
Yeah, John Oliver isn’t posh. He went to a state school and there were no tuition fees at Cambridge when he went there. And he's from the West Midlands, and retained the accent.
The segment was titled “Predatory Lending.” He wasn’t shaming people who use the “service” - he was calling out the lenders as loansharks who actively try to get people into a terrible downward spiral of debt and high-interest loans so they can profit from misery.
A Jezzie missing the point?!
Except until the payday loan industry’s extraordinarily predatory practices are stopped, he’s right. They are unfortunately never going to make the situation better and only serve to plummet those who use them further into debt. At worst, he was saying that payday loans are such a bad option and that they won’t…
FWIW, having gone to Cambridge doesn’t mean anything about how privileged (or otherwise) he grew up. It costs the same as every other uni and lots of people from non-privileged backgrounds go there.
So basically their response to a rant about women getting treated like shit online is to treat women like shit online...?
Grunt... The comments on Gizmodo... ugh. Way to make me ashamed of owning penis guys.
It would be awesome if he responded to that by actually doing a segment on “feminist propaganda” in which he mocks all of the idiots who consider the idea that women are human beings deserving of equal rights to be propaganda.
A bit off topic, but I find it rather awesome and oddly perfect that Jon Oliver is married to an American woman who was a trauma nurse (surgeon?) in Iraq and that they met at the Republican National Convention. Oliver is a staunch liberal but he is incredibly respectful to men and women in uniform and he has a way of…
Yes it does. As a man it took me so long to truly understand this in my bones.
This is incredibly satisfying. I remember a comment on one of the Last Week Tonight videos (I know, I know, never read the comments) was a bunch of bros asking for an exposé on “feminist propaganda”. It bothered me that a person could enjoy John Oliver’s show, appreciate the leanings the show has in highlighting…
My husband got really freaked out when he saw what some MRA types wrote to me after I commented on an editorial about domestic violence. Of course he wanted me to stop commenting about stuff online, so I had to do the whole “I will not be silenced” speech. But seriously, make that shit a crime already.
