I was so stoked about Lizzo’s performance–in a lot of other videos of her live, I feel like the sound balancing is off and doesn’t really do her justice (not to mention the god-awful Coachella shenanigans). They got it right this time, and the result was spectacular!

Missy Elliot is just a fucking genius. Her songs feel more modern and sexy and daring than anything on the radio now

Holy craaaaap, the lady in the yellow jumpsuit was the little girl from her video back in the day?? Thats amazing.

I needed this. OMG I needed this.

I just don’t get teary-eyed about this kind of stuff, but this got me.

Missy is probably one of the most innovative artist of the last 25 years. She wrote, produced, danced, choreographed, sang and rapped. She’s also one of the last artist to understand the visual medium. She really is amazing.

she is truly an ICON. she single handedly (ok, her and her INCREDIBLE dancers) brought life and relevancy back to that tired ass award show. i teared up watching that. and i’m so glad she shouted out busta rhymes who is absolutely deserving of his own award as well.

I’m so glad you posted this. I wouldn’t have sought out clips from the VMAs but this was so so so worth it. Missy’s an inspiration, the original, and long overdue for this kind of recognition!

Even in my hardest of hardcore metal days, I would stop and watch when Missy was on MTV. She is just mesmerizing. I think of her like I think of Peter Gabriel. I’m not always sure of what is happening, but you can’t NOT watch

He would have had a bright future in politics.

He wouldn’t show off his death ray, but later built a fucking fortified lair complete with airstrip?

You always hear that Kane’s opera singer wife in Citizen Kane was based on Marion Davies, but she lines up a lot more with this guy’s opera singer wife. As Danny Peary points out in Cult Movie Stars, Marion Davies, though Hearst did promote her career a lot, was actually a pretty talented and very popular comedic

I don’t have any idea why, but every time I hear Sylvester’s “Mighty Real” tears well up in my eyes.

At the end when Lil Papi and Angel walked away to go to breakfast, I fully expected something to immediately happen to them- anything from a mugging gone bad to a fucking meteor strike.

Everyone needs a Lil Papi in their life.

And two new children!

Jared Harris did a fair bit of tweeting about the finale. He said that his understanding was that kids in Inuit communities were raised communally in some ways so it’s not his kid, but he’s helping to take care of him so he does have a sort of family now.

I do agree that I liked that moment a bit better, but I’m also glad they went less heavy handed on him/Lady Silence as a pairing and had a less supernatural heavy ending.

But that’s a really efficient way to sell shipwreck insurance.

I might have to watch a repeat later tonight, but I thought that might be Crozier’s Netsilik family at the end, and his son sitting beside him at the ice hole waiting for a seal, which would indicate how much time has passed. The boy looks to be six or so, and didn’t Crozier say in an earlier episode, when discussing
