I totally agree.

I've written fiction a long time and, to be honest, it DOES feel like the characters exist fully formed in another realm. Deliberately writing characters to fit my politics makes for some heavy handed storytelling, in my experience.

That's what my husband and I did! It seemed that lots of the people we knew at the time thought it was really peculiar to have done so but now, years later, I know lots of people who've done similarly. It was fun and easy, and we're still married and also not broke. Good deal.
