John McCain's parents were both US citizens and John was born in a US military hospital in the Panama Canal Zone so he would have been eligible.

US presidents have to have been born in the US. If Obama were born in Kenya that would mean he couldn't be president no matter how good a president he might be. And let's face it; nothing inspires hatred on the part of the GOP like a good DFL president. For them it is less important that we have a good president than

I don't want to punish her for being satisfied with her appearance. I want to punish her for furthering the notion that women are catty bitches.

In your last paragraph, where you mention someone handing the kid a balloon and expecting the parent to pay for it, that is shocking. In the parent's position I would refuse to pay or to snatch the balloon from the weeping child. I would politely tell the vendor that s/he will have to take it back from the kid.

In the NYT article they never mention the word "vagina" and seem only to be concerned with sensation on exterior parts. I think the headline of this post is misleading.

Proms outlived their usefulness 40 years ago and should be abolished now. I'm serious.

I should think the danger would have something to do with your starting point. If a 200-pounder lost 16 pounds in 20 days wouldn't there be less risk than if a 100-pounder did the same thing?

Wait a minute, when I asked about deleting my account a couple days ago I was directed to the Terms of Service that said accounts can never be deleted. If I email help@gawker.com will they delete my account?

It's not a real thing. But they would fit within the state of Texas. Er, I dunno, reading down thread some people are saying that we would all fit in Jacksonville. I'm shutting up now.

Yeah but now you can wear whatever you want and people might quietly snicker or not even notice whereas as a teenager, you'd have been shunned or openly mocked. Fair trade.

And in the olden days, mules were reserved for kings!

Thank you for this. I've never lost a huge amount of weight, but whenever I've lost weight I always hoped people wouldn't notice. "You've lost weight!" passes for a compliment in the US these days; I've had more than one person tell me that they say that to people even when they don't think the person has lost any

Does no one remember the nasty things said about her hair when Hilary Clinton was FLOTUS? First ladies are always a target.

Because it feeds into the myth of the Bitchy Cat Fighty Jealous Possessive Female that is so central to our culture.

When I was much younger, back in the olden days when being female was even tougher, I liked "We're pregnant" because men just seemed so uninvolved in parenting. Now that I'm older I abhor that phrase.

That's not a joke at the foreigners' expense, is it? I took it to be about xenophobic officialdom.

I read a news story this morning that said officials are ruling out fracking.

I feel this way every time Jennifer Anniston complains about The Haircut.

I think the "women can be more evil than men" thing has far more to do with expectations relating to the sexes than anything else. We expect women to be kinder than men so when they do something evil it's so much more shocking.

I didn't take the time to read the linked article so maybe you can tell me if finances play any sort of role here. The elderly are prescribed more drugs than the young, and there are more elderly women than men, and the combination of being female and elderly does not always assure financial well-being ergo perhaps
