When she was nominated for Best Director for Lady Bird, she was just the 5th woman to receive the honor. Her last two films (Little Women, and Barbie) both received Best Picture nods, but the Best Director honors did not follow.

How come 1/2 (or more) of the hard rock and metal guitarists of the ‘80s and ‘90s site Ace as their favourite guitar player, or the reason they even picked up a guitar? KISS have a LOT of bad songs (and some of them are raging dickheads), but their first 6 albums (plus the 2 live ones) are pretty kick-ass - far above

I think part of the problem is that Kang’s goal is a little hard to grasp. Thanos wanted to wipe out half of all life because there’s too much life for the universe to sustain.

At the risk of jumping in early on another thread doomed to get 300 comments from dozens of people arguing at each other, Jon Stewart was never and certainly is not in this year 2024— a kingmaker. I watched TDS religiously through the first decade or so of his tenure, and Bush was still elected and subsequently reelec

When it originally aired, I had been reading the book for years, and I always hated the cartoon. It’s not a great lineup, uses the hideous Jim Lee costumes, and just amps up the Claremont cliches and soapy elements way too far.

Came here for the Hoopla erasure.  My old library actually lets you get 15 titles per month from them, plus there’s those months with bonus borrows.  Used to get 15 a month from Kanopy too until they switched over to the new tickets system.  Still works out to be around 15 though.

I’m incredibly lucky to spend most of my time around smart, rational, successful people. And while I’ve know these people are just one end of the spectrum, it’s still jarring to be reminded how absolutely, fist-fuckingly stupid so many Americans are.

This site’s constant, stupid editorializing about everything is obnoxious. The Last Jedi has a lot of problems—all three of the new ones did, though clearly Rise was the worst. At any rate it is not at all a perfect cinematic masterpiece.

Can we at least agree that for any perceived problems with the sequels, the human being known as Daisy Ridley isn’t one of them.

This was a great read! Please more stories like this AVClub, this was a lovely and interesting article.

It’s worth noting: This is the 3rd time Gerwig had a picture nominated for Best Picture but was passed over for a Best Director nomination.

yeah and they only had to fire the entire creative team and start from scratch once.

Margot Robbie>Emma Stone.

Nominating Ken but not Barbie is stupid and fits perfectly with the theme of the movie.

So it took them (checks calendar) 5 years to figure out that they should just continue the super popular old show?

Good news about Foggy and Karen. I think Elden Henson and Deborah Woll were really good and I thought it was a misstep not to include them in Born Again.

Yeah look i’m not up in arms about any of it, but i’ll give you my replacements and just to note, but everything I mentioned was in contention one way or the other, like none of my replacements are out of left field.

Problem is, the “there were just too many good directors this year” argument gets used *every* year. And it’s usually true that there’s a lot of good directors, but the fact that this happens year after year just emphasizes the fact that the Academy’s approach is “nominate the dudes first, then maybe we can consider

Margot Robbie didn’t just do good work. She’s the glue that holds that movie together. I’ve watched Barbie multiple times, and she is the heart of that thing. It’s performances like hers that really should but rarely do get honored in the lead acting categories. Do you realize just how hard it would be to do what she

Natalie Portman.
He later realized their characters in Thor 2 weren’t scripted to have sex, which made even weirder.
