I have a vague memory of some study showing that women have been getting less happy since the 50's, which has been (baselessly) blamed on the rise of feminism.
Fine, if you can let your cat poop in my yard, stalk my chickens, and kill the songbirds at my feeder, I get to let my dog into your place to poop in your yard, dig up your flowerbeds, and chase your cats.
I wish I could star this comment a hundred times. There's a huge amount of research on the ecological impacts of domesticated cats, but most people want to rely on their own anecdotes instead of becoming informed.
I am a scientist. I go to sites about science to read about science. Issues regarding pay in the sciences (and the increasing trend of expecting scientists to work for free) as well as the way female and minority researchers are treated are PART of science, and important issues worth discussing.
Yep, though I admittedly skimmed the last book. I don't know, I guess sometimes characters just rub you the wrong way!
I really wanted to like this series but got fed up with how catty and shallow I perceived the three/four main characters to be, especially towards each other. Was that just me?
Have you been to the Forever Young Adult blog? I think one of the writers there used to be a commenter here, and I really enjoy their book reviews.
Actually, the research doesn't tend bear this out- the traits valued in mates vary quite a bit culturally. For example, a large cross-cultural study found that in places with low indices of gender equality, men do tend to value beauty while women tend to value wealth. However, in places with high gender equality,…
I love this. They look like a troupe of badass warrior-nuns.
Meatpacking is one of the most dangerous jobs in America. Using faux-concern about field workers as an excuse to snark on vegetarians is pretty silly.
Yeah, it made me wonder which NYT staffer is her aunt/husband/college bestie. Because her story CAN'T have been considered front-page-worthy (let alone newsworthy) without a connection there, right? Either way, I'm a little sad for the old grey lady.
I love Anne and her approach to friendship. I read the Emily of New Moon series too, and always related more to Emily, except that she didn't have many female friends and her relationship with Ilse was sometimes fraught and sad.
So they're making some empty gestures for the sake of good PR?
It seems weirdly racist to assume that non-Western people don't ever use medication or medical intervention during birth.
This is all that needs to be said, right?
I'm so excited! I am a little disappointed that she didn't end up at the FBI, though.
I see your point, but I think there's a pretty significant difference between a hedgehog and an orca. Cetaceans are highly intelligent animals with complex social structures, so captivity is likely to be far more traumatic for them.
I hear you, but I do think its fair game to discuss how fake orgasms can be part a somewhat dysfunctional sexual culture. It's totally fine if you want to fake it- but I also think the general practice should be up for criticism. What does it say about us that so many women aren't comfortable saying "Sorry, this…
I can definitely see why people would get defensive. There's already a lot of pressure on women when it comes to sex, and this kind of criticism does add to it in a way. But I don't think that means we shouldn't discuss the consequences of fake orgasms as they relate to our wider sexual culture, especially since I…
