Yeah, I've heard the argument that many "recycled" products actually take more energy and resources to produce than new. "Eco-friendly" products are just designed to make people feel good about buying crap, when as you said we really need to be consuming less.

They're still treated in pretty horrific ways for most of their lives. I don't think the specific way they're killed has much to do with the argument.

I don't think I would have put it as harshly, but I pretty much agree. There's some serious cognitive dissonance going on in the brain of someone who's horrified by a dog being slaughtered and eaten but who happily eats bacon for breakfast and pork lo mein for dinner. I'm guilty of it myself- I don't eat meat but I

Just because a dress is made out of organic cotton or recycled polyester, that doesn't mean it's "eco-friendly." Marginally better than one made from conventional cotton or new materials, maybe, but it probably still has a significant footprint in terms of water, energy, etc.

Awesome!

Yeah, I think another problem with this kind of subtle bias is that it affects both male and female students. The girls will grow up doubting their abilities, and the boys will grow up thinking girls just aren't as good at math as they are.

I agree, I think she looks beautiful, albeit in a strange, unusual way.

Aw, the more I read about Zooey, the more I like her. Also, thanks to the recommendations of people here, I started watching The New Girl, and it's surprisingly pretty good! I actually found Zooey's character to be pretty three-dimensional and relatable, and same for the guys on the show.

I clicked on the link, it's an article by a psychologist that's pure evo-psych-style speculation, not even close to actual science. Ugh.

Let's please not cite shitty Psychology Today articles as if they say something meaningful or accurate about evolution.

Did you ask him if that's part of being mature[ly] masculine?

I read that over three times and still have no idea what it's supposed to mean.

Ah that sounds so fun! Once in college my house did a beer hunt instead of an easter egg hunt and we did such a good job we were finding hidden PBRs for months.

Holy crap, I just found out they're making Cloud Atlas into a movie and it'll be out later this year! It's one of my favorite books, but I have a really hard time imagining it on screen. On the plus side, one of the directors is Tom Tykwer, who I like, but on the minus side, the other directors are The Wachowskis (I

I loved The Hour! I kind of guessed what the "twist" might be at the end, though.

I agree. Katniss' girl-on-fire dress was supposed to be a bejeweled show-stopper, but it just looked like a lackluster prom dress with some CGI flames tacked on.

Huh, I just couldn't see it! For some reason, they mostly reminded me of like, late-90s Sex in the City outfits- lots of ruffled satin and fake flowers.

Some Louis XIV-era influence would have been awesome!

Yes! I was picturing a cross between the Fifth Element and Brazil, costume-wise.
