That's insane. When I was in school they had a cache of Scientific Calculators on hand for the rare occasion they were needed. All of the students have to have a regular calculator that could do sin/cos/tan, but aside from that, it was all basics.

It is tough though. My mom started her PhD when we were young kids, and didn't make it through. She picked it up again when we were all in our teens, and has since graduated. Doing something so intensive like that while trying to run a home is no joke - it take a ton of hard work to manage both.
