I thought this sounded like a tortured explanation for what is clearly artists burning off their creative energies at a young age, but then I followed your link and it looks like the book is a tounge-in-cheek premise the author thought would be interesting to write up as though he was serious (exactly like every paper

That was the first Floyd album I bought, which I did when I was a kid, when it came out, so it's hard for me to hear how it's not good, because I loved it immensely. The Untouchables was my first Morricone, but now I hear it mostly as a pastiche of earlier, stronger stuff, which is what I would expect of Final Cut—but

Yeah, "Blur" is "ragged and fractured" by design, a la Wowee Zowee, and a great record for it.

Wow, I just listened to that after linking to it, and it kind of made me want to throw up. Sure liked it at the time though.

It isn't that power pop is too catchy and interesting, it's that it tends to fall into blandly earnest a little too easily, and can sound rather samey. Those old Rhino comps do a great job culling the winners, though. One later power pop band I always liked was the Push Kings:

Dammit, this is actually not terrible. Not what I was hoping for. She still skates the edge of "out of tune" a little too hard (not entirely unlike Gainsbourg pushing Birkin outside of what she could sing for a fragile effect), but the music is rather swell indeed. Wish I had the instrumental track, which neither

Oh, that narrative-obsessed Jean-Luc Godard!
Seriously, though, if you can, track down Marker's primer on Tarkovsky…great stuff.
