I never read any of the lore. If it’s not presented in a cut-scene or a dialogue with a story character I actively interact with, it’s not important at all. I thought this was pretty standard. I do this all the time. The width of my pinky is 1 cm and the length of my thumb from tip to first joint is 1 inch.

Other than actually living with an ESL person, I’d say the next best way to understand someone is to be patient and forget the grammar. Really focus on the main words. Usually I can still recognize the words even if the pronunciation is slightly off.
