It would be super hypocritical of comic book fans to punish someone just for having an alter ego.
I’m just gonna take a second to say that Bleeding Cool sucks.
I can sympathize with the feelings of the creator (well, as much as a white dude can), but on the other hand I feel like the quest to remove ALL stereotypes from ALL media is also kind of creating a different narrative, that is just as culturally false (if not more), and you can see the results in the purposely bland…
While I understand this guy’s frustrations, Apu is a much better represented character than, say, Groundskeeper Willie, which is a “representation” of my culture and heritage. As a man of Scottish-Irish heritage, I’m often playing a devil’s advocate role in these discussions...like, for example, Lucky the Leprechaun…
I understand the accent is stereotypical and shitty, but if a voice actor absolutely has to share the ethnic and national background of a character she or he voices, John DiMaggio should be run out of town on a pole. Also, I suspect that Billy West is not actually a candy-coated chocolate.
Anyone who does see themselves reflected in a Simpsons character should seriously reconsider their life.
Yeah, I’m not sure if this is a poorly-written review, or if the documentary itself glosses over those aspects.
“little thought has been given to the Apu character beyond the accent, that Apu is his ethnicity (and a blatantly distorted one at that) and that’s it.”
Wow they’re really socking it to that Donald Trump guy. He must work there or something.
I think part of the whole point of setting it pre-TOS is to get out of having to deal with writing for post-TNG-era perfect people. We still have a Federation that is trying to be better, but can still be kind of fucked up.
