I'm almost positive that my total apathy to Chrono Trigger and FFVI (both of which I've played to completion) is 100% due to everyone telling me how much better they were than VII. That said your opinion is certainly the mainline one, and probably for good reason.

I agree graphically.

The art direction for some of those backgrounds holds up pretty well. And some of the story telling beats are still some of the best in the entire series in my opinion.
