I doubt that; Gilliam did his dance with the comic book superhero movie back in the 1980s with WATCHMEN, and already saw it's a dead end for him.

I've long said that someday a movie adapted from a comic will win the Oscar- but it'll be something like ROAD TO PERDITION or A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.
The best part of the superhero boom is that, when it fades (and I think it's already crested), the idea that comic books as a mainstream media will remain.

When Spielberg referred to the superhero films being a "trend" like the Western, he was specifically referring to that period in the late 50s/early 60s when they totally dominated TV and movies (at one point, almost half the drama series on TV were Westerns).
The main reason the Western lost it's cultural dominance

He doesn't CARE about the difference between Marvel and DC. Give him a medal.

Actually, Gilliam is a big enough fan of the Batman comics he grew up on that he wrote a tribute to them for one of the anniversary issues (BATMAN #400, if I recall).
And I think he'd have made a great, fun Batman movie, if given his own head on the project. (which, of course, Warners would NEVER allow)

Or possibly the film HALLOWEEN is a dramatization of the the notorious Haddonfield Slasher Murders (also know as the Star Trek Slasher because, y'know, guy in a Shatner mask.)

I'm a Canadian. All your states seem tiny to me.

To be fair, that kid totally looks like the state of Denver.

I've never understood why a gorilla is named "Donkey".

IN THE UNSPECIFIED ORIFICE OF MADNESS

Well, if it ain't "solid", it ain't XXX.

Well, I think it's as much that Kojima is a fan who openly admits he's paying homage to his hero, whereas Besson and company just lawyered up and said "prove it".

The studios pretty much HAVE to complete and release those movies; contracts have been signed, and Johnny Depp's agent isn't going to say "ok, just slip us a couple bucks for our time, and we'll tear up our twenty million dollar check".
When they made THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD back in the 1930s, they started

"Dikachu squirts back… not with seltzer"

Hey, do we know for a FACT that wasn't just Roger Moore playing a prank?

The name Spielberg still has a lot of pull attached to a franchise he helped nuture. (certainly more than some wanna-be).
As an aside: if people have a low opinion of fans, it's probably because of things like the way that they take so much delight in the failures of the creators behind their favorite films.

Disney could throw a bunch of lawyers at Spielberg to dislodge him if they really wanted to, sure- but it would be a stupid decision. His name means a lot to the general public, and also, y'know, he's a freakin' genius/ national treasure.
And more to the point, it would never come to that. Spielberg doesn't NEED to
