Remaking 3 would actually be a little bit like what they've done with the new PLANET OF THE APES films- after Burton botched the remake of the original, they jumped to the most popular sequel (in their case, CONQUEST), and remodeled it into a new starting point.

THe original's a classic, and still works; New Nightmare is an interesting "companion piece"; 3 is … well, it's basically exactly what people who've never seen one THINK a "Freddy" movie is like; 2 has that whole "gay subtext takes over the film" thing, which at least makes it interesting.
