That's very much the sense of him that I got watching the 2012 campaign from my one-degree-of-separation as a Canadian — fundamentally a moderate guy much more in line with the Republican Party of 20 or 30 years ago (when Rockefeller Republicans still existed), trying (and mostly failing) to pretend he actually fit in…

Unfortunately, I can vouch that it's not a unique argument. I'm gay, but I've had enough bi friends over the years to know that "homophobia doesn't affect you because you can just go hide behind an opposite-sex relationship" really is a thing lots of people really do think.

I wouldn't say she was 100% on board with it. She seemed very much *not* on board at several points, and merely going along with it for lack of any better ideas.
