You don't have to start one of the album tracks playing, you just need to make sure the album artwork window is set to display the selected track. If it's set to display the currently playing track instead just click on its title bar.

Aha...I didn't read Jonathan's post closely enough before adding mine. I should add that the comments field IS stored on the iPod since it is a standard ID3 tag and is stored within the MP3 file.

I actually use the Comments field for tagging which functions the same as the Grouping field in smart playlists.

You can also use the technique I mentioned to gift songs you haven't purchased from iTunes as long as their titles match the ones in iTunes exactly. In addition, you can drag a track name from the iTunes store onto a playlist name and it will copy the 30 second preview. This works for gifting playlists as well.
