Are you looking for grill surface temp or the ol “cold/hot/burnt” screw in job?

I'm with you on the temp controller. I got mine from auberins.com for about the same coin. On a fairly large offset smoker it cuts my wood usage by 1/3. That and insulating the firebox. Waste heat is the worst heat.
