This is accurate. As a server I would have felt the same way because of the chance I could hustle and make more. But it is a very micro-level view—focused on the immediate personal need.

Its funny people keep mentioning pizza chains, these places have absolutely been doing BETTER than they were pre covid. Its dining restaurants and those like it who are reallyfucked right now. Pizza joints are without a doubt NOT lacking business.
Something not mentioned often (that I’ve seen) is most servers - if given the option - of a guaranteed hourly pay vs $2.13 plus tips - almost always choose the $2.13. Most servers i know (myself included although its been 20 years since last i rolled silverware) were severs because of the ability to make so much more…
also tip for grocery delivery pick ups...I’m not just saying that because I work in a grocery store....but I’m not NOT saying that...
This is why tipping is a stupid, retrograde, harmful custom. It’s also why the rest of the civilized world doesn’t use it.
I’ve been tipping about 35% on my take out orders. You can even think of it “selfishly” if you have to. Like, I don’t want my favorite local pizza place going out of business.
Everybody deserves to be paid a good wage by their employer
Yay! Salty Waitress is back! You were missed.
Yeah this is a time for big tips (if at all possible) and eating from locals only. McDonald’s can weather this fine. The mom and pops can’t and their staff deserve to be paid for their extra risk.
Tip as much as you can afford to. A lot of people are hurting right now, but restaurants are getting killed. These places operate on thin margins in the best of times, and many won't be open once we're all able to rejoin society. But these places are vital to our communities:roughly 10% of the working population works…
Also, I can’t think of a bigger service than bringing prepared meals to my house. I tend to tip a solid 20% for a traditional dining experience, but I tip a minimum of 25% for anyone who delivers food to me.
Tip if you can afford it. Obligations, Politeness, and Social Standards are completely out the window right now. The focus it to take care of yourself, and then take care of each other. Remember, “secure your own mask first before assisting others.” If you can tip, please do. If you can’t, please take care of…
Really, it comes across as some forced congratulatory bullshit, to me. It basically sounds like Housemate #2 wants the servers to beg them for a tip so they can feel like a BIG PERSON; “OH, look at me! I’m helping the poors!” They can fuck right off with that shit.
The few neighborhood spots I’ve been getting take-out from are owned by people that live in my neighborhood that have great staff that I know are worried about these times. Definitely being fast & loose with my tipping.
I can’t imagine anyone familiar with this column wouldn’t predict the answer.
Aside from the fact that I always tip, the last time I got takeout pizza, the guy in front of me was coughing as he counted out six crumpled ones. I paid two twenties for $27 worth of pizza and told her to keep the change. I wasn't touchin' that shit, and I felt bad that she was.
I haven’t exactly been eating out more, but at the same time, I too have been tipping more because I feel for local restaurants and their employees. I usually always tip 20%, but during these times, I have been adding a few more bucks to that. They really do deserve to be treated better.
Right now I think it should just be considered hazard pay! The people working the carryout service would probably be sheltering at home if they had the option. Anyone flipped over to carryout only really should have at least non-tipped minimum wage (not that it’s much better, we need at least a $15 minimum across the…
You tip 1 roll of TP per order. Tip with 2-ply if it is a large order or contactless delivery.
I’m not eating out much and when I do it’s like a panini or a hoagie or something. I’ve basically been giving a $20 on a bill that’s $10 and change and telling them to keep it. Support your local eateries by tipping a load!
