Schools are strange, though. I’ve never worked with schools and don’t have kids, but from what I understand teachers definitely work those sorts of insane hours. Some companies do, too, for sure, but most company workers aren’t putting in tons of overtime (at least not more than what Americans do).

There are populations of born-in-Japan-but-not-Japanese ethnicities living in Japan who have been there for generations but are still treated like foreigners, like Koreans who have been there since WW2 or beyond.

FWIW, I’m currently on the first day of my 10 day new year’s holiday in Tokyo. The entire office is shut down until 7 January. THIS.  My 3 bedroom apartment in Tokyo is cheaper by a lot than what I would be paying even somewhere “cheap” like Texas.  It’s certainly possible to spend a whole lot of money on a place in Tokyo but there’s tons of decent, cheap housing in the city.
