While that is correct for painting, sculpture, and architecture, the great hymns written by the likes of Bach weren’t commissioned. Similarly, the later thematically Christian writings of folks like CS Lewis and Hawthorn still hold up and weren’t commissioned by any church.

The church had the market cornered and painting keeps getting worse as a medium in general. There are lots of technically adequate painters, but I feel like even they struggle to find inspiration in their work.
