I can believe person A or person B. Since A alleged that X occurred, and B alleges that X did not occur, I need more proof to determine whether or not X occurred. As there is no additional evidence that X occurred aside from A's statements, and I believe that a person is innocent unless proven otherwise, I believe B.

I didn't infer that the story never ran, and one would think she'd have leaked the documents herself before committing suicide. Ideally it'll be wrapped up in the finale, otherwise it's simply a pretty weak plot device.
