The 2% I get back on my Visa or MC represents another potential discount, since I always pay my credit card bills in full. Very good point. Even Amex Premium Coverage — which I like a lot — currently excludes rentals in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.

Of course, all bets are off when facing language and cultural barriers: E.g., the agent in Mexico doesn’t speak English, your Spanish is mediocre, and the agent’s boss has told her that all rentals require insurance. Period. I did carry a copy of my Amex extended policy, and they didn’t care.
