Touch screens are nearly impossible for a controller orientated game, so I've been limiting myself to turn based RPGs when on the go.
I'm going to verify that on a PS3 controller the digital directional buttons do in fact roll because they are on one piece of plastic. They aren't separate buttons as you'd propose from these images despite having a plastic that covers the recession.
