I think it would fit with the ethos of Alien, but not Aliens. They’re just two very different movies. Prometheus and Covenant do go back to the horror of Alien with how they treat their characters, in ways I don’t like (among other issues). Alien at least had Ripley (and Jones) make it out.

Joking aside, what irrevocably ruined the whole enterprise for me was killing Newt and Hicks. Do that and the whole message and point of Aliens is undone in a way I just cannot condone.

Covenant could be somewhat redeemed if the theoretical third movie was fantastic.

They did! There was the pretty bad Alien Resurrection and Alien Covenant. Prometheus was set in the Alien universe but was only kind of an Alien movie.

There was also two Alien vs Predator movies that were not that good.
