I dont think it’s really about 1964 as much as its about that 60s age of Marvel Comics. The Silver and Bronze Xmen eras. There were scenes of him meeting Max for the first time, of his mom leaving, I think it was meant to be a flurry of family dysfunctions that culminated in the bragging bully we met last season. I always just felt it was a personality clash. Bonnie certainly doesn’t seem to think Maddy deserves the pedestal she keeps trying to put herself on.
