Huh. So, let’s see here...
Brazilian here. We normally don’t think about it until we come to the US and need to redefine our identity. Here I’m Latina, which is something people/institutions need to know about me, and it’s fine. We’re not Hispanics though, as our language isn’t Spanish.
Boost! The first woman to win the “Nobel Prize for Maths” deserves our recognition. Prof Mirzakhani was brilliant and so young; hopefully Jez honors her memory with an article. BBC link in the meantime:
Oh yeah... I wish I had a penny for every time I had to explain that my blonde Paraguayan family has been in the country for hundreds of years and no, not “wink, wink” hundreds of years.
While some current members generally seem okay with it, some holdouts are definitely deflated. Yeah. I said it.
Yeah. Privileged kids + socializing (media too) still sliding into the spots waiting for them. Won’t hold my breath waiting for a staffer who attended community college while assembling sammiches on the clock, sleeping in a cardboard box, grateful for a winter coat from a Goodwill truck.
I appreciate Emma’s work and that of this site’s other writers ... but I also think that what you really need is the ability (read: money) to just move to New York and then start looking around for unpaid internships to advance your career.

Any time I see lofts or ladders to beds I think, “what if they have to pee in the middle of the night?” I can barely drag my sleep-drunken ass down the hallway let outline navigate a ladder in the middle of the night.
My thoughts exactly. I’ve lived “open concept” my whole life. One foot in the living room, one foot in the kitchen, two steps from my bedroom. All of the cooking and living smells circulate. Give me a classy house where every activity is cut off from the other ones. I would like privacy.
We need walls! That’s how you know where to put your furniture! And if you take down all of the walls, where do you put your coat closet? No one ever thinks of the coats.
I feel like there are 3 people who get tiny houses.
Open concept fucking sucks. And it’s inescapable now.
oh you mean a studio apartment? These tiny home owners typically have a LOT of smugness about how all they want is to be environmentally friendly, but it’s pretty well demonstrated that the most environmentally friendly thing you can do is live in a densely populated city, in an already existing apartment.
One of my friends excitedly posted the for sale listing of the house next door. Everyone was like “It’s so cute but it’s SO SMALL.”
Tiny houses are upper middle class poverty fantasies. Same with “open concept” floor plans. You want to live in a small house and “do with less” ? Do it while making poverty wages
I think I saw one tiny house episode where it was dad buying a tiny house on wheels after the divorce. “The kids will love it! We’ll travel all around the country having adventures!”
I’ve seen quite a few episodes where the couples claim to be downsizing with their family to focus on the important things in life. Which is exactly the line my parents gave us about moving to the country because they couldn’t afford town taxes anymore. So it’s difficult to know how many are choosing that life. But it…
I mean, there is a middle ground between a 4000 sq foot McMansion and a 200 sq foot tiny home.
