I’ve been there and they are indeed trying. Seeing as there is more central control in China they can set the right policies in place faster. The initial cost is huge but much less than the cost of doing nothing.

The picture is changing - the flaw of static thinking is that it assumes conditions will remain the same indefinitely. More and more coal mining companies are declaring bankruptcy. Distressed assets can be obtained fairly cheaply - and nothing stops Bezos from using front companies to buy big blocks of mining capacity…
