Have you ever tried finch? it does pretty much the same thing but uses libpurple as the backend (same as pidgin)

On Linux you could use the Windows Instructions for start up and then use cron for shutdown.

if you insert the upgrade disk and "upgrade" from inside windows 7, it will allow you to enter the key without a problem

the problem your having is very easy to fix. After fully installing Windows 7, insert the install disk and do an "upgrade" from inside Windows 7. It will then reinstall and the upgrade key will be accepted (I have experience of doing this before)
