No problem. I don't mean to imply all the iReports are wrong. Just that it's hard to tell sometimes. I've been taken in before.
No problem. I don't mean to imply all the iReports are wrong. Just that it's hard to tell sometimes. I've been taken in before.
One example: an iReport claimed that the Turkish police used Agent Orange on protesters. That blew up on Twitter before it finally got debunked.
That's because there really isn't a religious side, or at least, it isn't manifesting the way Western media would like it to. This isn't sectarianism.
Yes, and a lot of these reports aren't accurate, so keep that in mind.
This is one of the worst articles I've read about the Turkish protests. Yes, the protestors are mostly young but there's absolutely no way to tell if they're mostly secular. Why? Because, shocker, Muslims sometimes drink beer and not all Muslim women wear headscarves! I know, right? How are we supposed to profile them…
I adore comics and I adore movies about comics, but seriously, thank god for the Hawkeye Initiative.
Best sort of Marxist to be :) Speaking as a Marxist.
Well, I didn't assume she was white or even non-religious. I just don't think articles like this are particularly helpful when it comes to reducing negative stereotypes about Muslim women.
dear fellow white feminists: please cut it out with the shock(!) that religious women, especially Muslim women, like sex. It's not a revelation. That sort of reaction is partially why so many religious women and women of color don't resonate with feminism as a movement.

Just signing in to say that this thread has been the best part of my day.
It also comes a day after I had a dream that I was married to both Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch.
They were lovely husbands.
That happened to me too! I got diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar 1 and obsessive compulsive disorder at the ages of 15-16. No one bothered to run an official assessment, but that didn't stop my psychiatrist from prescribing me a cocktail of medications. Eventually, I took four medications a day (including…
I must be poor, because $28 for a haircut sounds really expensive.
Oh, I know. LSE has surprising pockets of radicalism. It's definitely not just limited to my school (I went to Goldsmiths).
AMEN. I went to a super leftist campus of the University of London, and he knew it, and I don't know what the fuck he was expecting from someone who publicly identifies as an activist. It's not like I blindsided him! And then he actually asked me to show him my rack. GTFO. I choose to believe he's some sort of…
Yeah. Of all the defences of capitalism 'China did it, look!' isn't really the way to go. But Goldman Sachs. Sooo not really a shock, I guess.
Actually, I'm a neo-Marxist, because I am *actually* a radical leftist. I hold these views because of what I study, and it's a bit off topic for the post at hand, which is why I didn't elaborate. But I don't appreciate being called delusional. As Bob Law already pointed out, that's a rather relative categorization.
Yes, let's definitely make this all about my political views.
Usually I'd agree with you (generalizations are no bueno). In Goldman Sachs' case, though, I think the company culture is definitely skewed toward favoring the slightly sociopathic. The guy I talked to bragged of his 'charity stint' like it made up for his involvement with Goldman Sachs. It just doesn't, sorry.
Protip: never, ever date anyone who works at Goldman Sachs.
A Goldman Sachs employee messaged me on Ok Cupid. It went fine...until we started discussing economics. He then proceeded to demean and insult me for being a Marxist, told me capitalism was the way to go because 'it worked in China' and then asked to see my…
Journalist Jeff Sharlet has been tweeting examples of the hate speech protesters received under the #uglyivy hashtag. Definitely worth a read.
