Yep, hence why I said it was “very unlikely.” But what is more likely is that larger parts of the car - like, I don’t know, the engine and transmission, which were completely severed from Dillon’s car - could make their way into the stands. Or even just a wheel, when traveling at those speeds can kill someone. See

It’s amazing that it was able to hold the forces of a 3500 lb chunk of metal inside the track. However, Dillon’s engine could have easily gone through the fence; thankfully, it didn’t. I just think something needs to change (and it looks like I’m not alone) in “plate racing” as a whole, or we are going to keep having

I know that; I’m not suggesting they would. My fear is this: Dillon’s car went into the catch fence in front of the entire field. It is possible, though very unlikely, that another car of the 30 within two seconds him could get airborne and hit the now-damaged catch fence in the same place - or close to it - and cause

Agreed. But you can’t rebuild a fence in two seconds, when in those two seconds 30 cars are all trying to avoid getting wrecked.

Now playing

The e60 nailed its follow-up. But the e39 is still awesome!

This specifically has to stop: racing that leads to cars hitting the catch fence at nearly 200mph. I agree, everything went right, but what can happen at these speeds with these packs so close together is terrifying. Imagine if another car had hit the catch fence in the same area that Dillon did...

I agree; the advances in safety have been huge. However, if you look at that fence, and the fence at Dega after Edwards’ crash in 09, it wouldn’t hold up should another car hit it. With 30 cars within seconds of each other, it is possible, though unlikely, for another car to breach the safety margin.

Momentum = energy = danger... For everyone.

Without the plate, cars would be running around 230 or so. Even with extra downforce, that’s a huge amount of momentum for cars of this type.

And go around upwards of 230? Try keeping that on the ground...

Someone is going to die sooner or later. Nothing is worth another life.

I pretty much have stopped watching. I find the super speedway races to be boring for 95% of the laps, only to get dangerously exciting in the closing laps.

But what can we do? Cut power further? Drop the banking? Make the cars handle terribly?

I agree with all of your sentiments, but I have to say that this sort of racing needs a change. Someone is going to get killed if we keep having these last lap crashes, and we’ll have a repeat of Le Mans in 1955 when a car goes through the fence and kills hundreds.

I’d still take that block, though! What a conversation piece.

This shit HAS to stop.

I drive an e39 530i, and I watch both channels, despite neither really having deep relevance to me! It’s just great entertainment.

Uhhh, take it apart? There’s so much plastic you’d break in the process you’d have no choice but to “restore” it. Ask me how I know... (hint: I own an e39)

Awww! Now I can’t park like a BMW driver anymore... ;)

You didn’t mention THIS! That’s the most important part!
